Ground Improvement and Support
It is often necessary in tunnelling to enhance the strength properties and impermeability of the ground artificially in order to provide additional stability during construction or supplement the support capability of the permanent tunnel lining. Two basic methods are commonly available, namely injection grouting and strata reinforcement using ground anchorages and rockbolts. Though normally used during the construction of new tunnels, these methods are finding increasing use in the refurbishment of existing tunnels.
Injection of a fast reacting, expansive polyurethane will fill any voids and seal leaks. Such a grout should have known characteristics, be sufficiently free flowing to allow good penetration of the external substrate, and be injected to where the problem lies. In situations where lining instability may be a problem, injection of an acrylic resin will fill any water paths and seal the area without putting pressure on the structure.
N.V. Bekaert SA
Steel Fibre Reinforcement and Dosing Equipment
Bekaert manufactures the popular range of Dramix® cold drawn wire steel fibres. The fibres are available in different lengths (30, 35, 40, 50 and 60 mm) and in different performance classes (45, 65 and 80) according to the application. Dramix can be used with traditional dry and wet shotcreting equipment, materials and additives. Dramix® fibres are glued together in bundles by water-soluble glue. The bundles separate easily into single fibres and guarantee a homogeneous distribution in the concrete mix. A more recent innovation has been the use of Dramix in precast segmental linings; the Dramix is batched into the concrete via the specialised dosing equipment that will be displayed at UC2001. The equipment is supplied by Incite AB of Sweden, who have over 130 units operating worldwide.
The typical fibre design has been developed and improved after years of research and over 30 years of experience. An optimal balance has been created between shape, tensile strength and L/D ratio, and the carefully designed hooked ends provide optimal anchorage in the concrete. Both companies operate worldwide, and provide advice on lining design and installation to their customers. Both have been involved in many major tunnelling projects, and can rightly claim to be the foremost innovators in the steel fibre reinforcement industry. Their products and original inventions are being widely emulated. Bekaert publishes an excellent 230-page illustrated reference text entitled "Tunnelling the World", currently being revised, that describes recent developments in shotcrete, tunnel technology and equipment with particular reference to steel fibre reinforcement.

Keller Ground Engineering
Compensation Grouting
Compensation grouting using soil fracturing is a process largely developed and pioneered by Keller and now offered worldwide under the trademark Soilfrac. Keller first used the process in the early seventies to successfully arrest and reverse settlement of structures that had settled out of vertical tolerance, whilst ensuring minimal disturbance to the occupants during the works.
The system was further developed by Keller to control movement caused by tunnelling operations, permitting the rapid expansion of underground transit systems in urban areas.
Keller has since used Soilfrac to control settlement on many rail tunnelling projects in weak soils in Germany, Portugal, Austria, and Canada. They also introduced the system into the UK some ten years ago, initially for work on the Jubilee Line extension and the Heathrow Express tunnels. Further UK projects carried out by Keller include the DLR extension to Lewisham, and treatment to a number of major retail centres suffering from deep seated slab settlement problems.
Keller is a world leader in compensation grouting, and offers both Soilfrac and Compaction grouting, along with a wide range of other specialist grouting systems.
