Production Equipment for Tunnelling
There have been continued advances made in the technology of all forms of tunnelling face machines, with an increasing emphasis on system ergonomics and improvements in efficiency through the use of electronics. The result is an increasing equipment sophistication and adaptability, together with an improved working environment that demands a new breed of tunneller who is more technically proficient and carries ever-greater responsibility for maintaining the performance capabilities of the new generations of tunnelling machines.
Most of the large manufacturers have excellent in-house or on-the-job training schemes. However, there is an emerging gap between the sophistication of tunnelling machines and the capability of their operators. Also, legislation limiting direct manual operation of face equipment, from clay spades to drill rigs and roadheaders, and a reluctance to work in a dirty and dangerous tunnelling environment by the type of personnel expected to operate a sophisticated rig such as a multi-boom drill jumbo, will require ever greater innovation on the part of the manufacturers. This, in turn, will require an increasingly qualified and experienced tunnelling workforce to obtain the maximum utilisation of the plant.

Alvenius Industrier AB
Quick Coupling Piping Systems
Alvenius Industrier of Sweden has for many years supplied piping systems to the tunnelling industry all over the world. Alvenius Tunnelling (AT) pipes with a diameter range between 48 mm and 508 mm are delivered either hot dip galvanised or untreated, and with the well known Alvenius quick coupling with self-sealing gasket. Alvenius has now expanded the product range with TP-pipes, a steel piping system which is thermo-plastic coated inside and outside. This combines the strength of steel and resistance of thermo-plastic to a wide variety of corrosive media. The TP-pipes are also ideal for applications where a very long service life is required, for instance in permanent fire fighting pipe systems. The Arlanda Link Consortium has installed Alvenius TP-pipes as fire fighting piping in 10 km of tunnels at the high speed railway between Stockholm City and Stockholm International Airport. Stockholm Transit Authority also chose the Alvenius TP-pipe system for fire hydrant pipes. The project planning for all fifty underground stations includes Alvenius TP-pipes in competition with stainless steel. SL chose the Alvenius pipe system because the quick coupling system makes installation simple and cost effective, as no welding is needed. TP-pipes are also frequently used in the mining industry as leaching, process and cooling water pipelines. Alvenius are planning for fast growing sales volume for TP-pipes, having invested in a new production line for thermo-pIastic coating of pipes and fittings.
